Can WePay be used internationally?

Jackie
posted this on February 23, 2013 09:47 AM

At this time, WePay only supports US-based users. You need to have a social security number and US billing address in order to get money out of WePay.  If you are in the US, you can collect money from people using international credit cards.  We do have plans to be international one day, but we don't have an exact timeline yet.

If you are in the US (and have a social security number and US billing address), you can accept international credit cards.  WePay accepts all Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express cards.  Funds cannot be sent to a non-US bank account nor can checks be sent internationally.

Are there any plans yet to expand abroad?

Hi there! We definitely are considering expanding internationally, but we don't have an ETA on it yet. Once we are available, we'll make sure to make a big announcement!

Hi Stephen! There's a chance, but we just don't have a time frame. We'll add Ireland to the list of requested countries!

You should make this more obvious. Ponder this scenario:

Mr X register with wepay.com to receive payments. Mr X is a resident of Germany and has no US SSN. He registers for "Personal Use".

Mr X is very happy. He sets up his button on his website and starts receiving payments.

Mr X now wants to withdraw the received amount, and realizes that he can't do so without an US SSN, which he has no way of obtaining.

Hi Rolf! That's definitely good feedback and we'll work on making this more obvious. Upon sign-up, there is a note by the Sign Up button that says, "You must be a US citizen to accept payments." However, if people are missing this, then we do need to look at and improve it! Thank you for your note!

Can't believe this. I realize that after playing with your API for days! This information is nowhere! That is just stupid!

Hi there! Upon sign-up, there is a note by the Sign Up button that says, "You must be a US citizen to accept payments." We apologize if this wasn't apparent and we'll look at ways to making it more prominent.

Yes, it's easy to miss.

How about a mandatory country seletion drop-down. Or writing it on the button as opposed to under it. Or making it black instead of gray.

Anyway I surely missed it, and don't seem to be the only one.

Considering the possible scenario previously described, it should be made more obvious, unless there are other ways to keep that scenario from happening which are in place.

Another vote for Australia!! Seriously - if this was available in Australia soooooo many people would jump on it. Folks in the US simply don't comprehend how prohibitive it is to accept payments online in Australia. It's a paperwork nightmare, you almost need to be in business for 3 years before you can ever start to be in business. Crazy! PLEASE BRING WEPAY TO AUSTRALIA!!!

International Currency (Multiple Currency Processing)

Not sure if this thread is the right one to ask this question but does WEPAY accept international currencies (INR,AUD,GBP,EUR) and charge my international customer in their local currency? (instead of charge in USD and they pay forex fees to their banks?) Pls advise.

Currently, because WePay is only available in the US, we are only able to charge in USD. If there is conversion needed, that is typically done through the customer's bank. Hopefully this helps!

Hi Jackie/WePay,

I'm a web developer from Vietnam. I have played with your API for my ecommerce product and I'm really happy with it.

It is amazing if you will support Vietnam in future. I'm looking for a Paypal alternative for my business and WePay is promising.

Cheers!

Hi Abdul! Because international payment markets have significant regulations, and therefore a lot of hurdles to entry, it can take a while for us to go beyond the US. We're working on it, though, and will make a big announcement when we do!

Hi Farhan! WePay will be able to send funds to any US bank account that allows ACH transfers. It may be best to check with Payoneer.com to see if they'll accept deposits from WePay.

I'm going to request Australia too. We're massively under-represented in this market, with PayPal being the only real solution for most of us.

Hi Kenneth! We do require a social security number in order to withdraw to stay in compliance with state and federal regulations. If you do not have a social security number, it may be best to find a trusted individual with a social security number to take over the account in order to withdraw!

Damn! Is this information on your site somewhere obvious? If not, it should be. I've put a quite a bit of time into setting up an NZ based charity web application I'm developing to use WePay, but sounds like it may have been a waste of time.

South Korea needs 'we pay'. I love this service. By the way, can't you send the payment to Paypal account? It would be an alternative before you go international.

Hi Carlos! The bank account would need to be in your brother's name if the account will be used with his information. The administrator of the account would be the legal owner, so he would be able to control the account accordingly.

Three years ago someone was posting on Reddit about how you guys were close. That was three years ago. Working with WePay is ridiculously easy, and I love it that way, but the international interest in my new crowdfunding platform combined with your lack of international support, or even any meaningful updates as to when this might become reality, is causing me to look elsewhere.

Hi Liz! At this time, WePay cannot transfer money between countries, even if the account holder is in the US. Individuals from The Netherlands and China can pay to an American account holder, but those funds would not be transferrable except within the US. Sorry about that!
